Walgreens collects 15,000 pounds of caps for Sammie’s Buddy Bench Project

9-year-old Sammie Vance from Fort Wayne helped spread the idea of the buddy bench.

A bench where someone who is lonely can sit and then other students may join them.

The idea is to help kids form friendships and combat loneliness in schools.

Sammie started collecting recycled caps to make the buddy benches.

Now they exist in several Fort Wayne schools.

The idea went national and 150 Indiana Walgreens stores collected caps for Sammie’s Buddy Bench Project all summer long!

They now have 15,000 pounds of caps, enough for 75 buddy benches!

But those benches cost money and now Sammie is asking for the public’s help to make her dream a reality.

Sammie and her mom, Heidi Vance, sat down with morning anchor Julian Teekaram to talk about fundraising efforts and the reaction the project is getting around the world.
