Indiana officer helps raccoon in a sticky situation

DANVILLE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — An Indiana police officer ran into a unique situation when helped out a raccoon with its head stuck in a jar of peanut butter.

WTHR reported that Danville Police Officer Josh Gauger said he’s been on the force for four years, but this situation was a first.

"In the street here I was headed west when, right at the top of the street here, the raccoon was with his family in the middle of the road. Just walking westbound. Something was a little off," Gauger told WTHR.

He said he watched the raccoon walk into a curb and hit his head on it, then he turned on his body camera to document the action.

"He hit his head on the curb," Gauger said. "While I was putting on gloves he walked straight into my car tire. At that point I knew he could not see anything, he couldn’t see at all so I grabbed him by the body and by the head. Mom and dad watched by the side of the road to make sure I wasn’t going to hurt their baby, one of the weirdest things I have ever encountered with an animal."

He said the young raccoon then made some noises before going into some trees with his parents.
